Update: Problems? Yoshihiro's Games Decrypter V2 should solve it. Give Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 a try now. And if you're experiencing the black screen problem, change the UMD mode. I've had much success using the M33 driver.

Nevermind PSP Custom Firmware 5.55 or 6.00; Yoshihiro has released his 5.55 and 6.00 Games (EBOOT.BIN) Decrypter.

In short: use this tool to decrypt the firmware 5.55 or 6.00 EBOOT.BIN from whatever [legitimately purchased UMD] game, build an ISO image using UMDGen with the decrypted EBOOT, and botta bing botta boom — you're playing on Custom Firmware 5.50 GEN-B.

All right, all right… I picked up my copy of MotorStorm earlier today and here's the process I took. But first let me tell you about my PSP:

5.50 GEN-B2
VshMenu is [currently] disabled; I got my reasons. You can no doubt skip a couple steps if you're using it.
UMD Mode: M33 driver -NO UMD-
MotorStorm (US) UMD

The steps:

Install 5.55 & 6.00 Games Decrypter like any other homebrew.
Boot into 5.50 GEN's recovery console by holding R-TRIGGER on boot.
Go to Configuration -> XMB Usb Device -> change to UMD Disc.
Enable USB mode from the XMB; copy UMD9660.ISO to your local; open UMDGen.
In UMDGen open the UMD9660.ISO file.
Navigate to PSP_GAME/SYSDIR; highlight EBOOT.BIN; right-click -> Extract Selected…
Save it somewhere; boot into the recovery console again (See step 1); set the USB mode back to Memory Stick (See step 2).
Enable USB from the XMB again; copy the encrypted EBOOT.BIN to your memory stick root.
Exit out of USB mode and run the Games Decrypter app.
Enable USB mode one more time.
If you closed UMDGen, reopen it and open UMD9660.ISO; browse to PSP_GAME/SYSDIR.
From the newly created DECRYPTOR directory on your memory stick, drag & drop the unencrypted EBOOT.BIN to the right windowpane in UMDGen overwriting the original file.
Save the ISO; copy it to the ISO directory on your memory stick.
You're done.

PSP Go review

At last, Sony's other worst-kept secret, the UMD-less PSP Go, is working its way through retail channels this week. The device itself is a marked improvement, but of course that's not the whole story. In many ways antithetical to the hype surrounding the PlayStation 3 Slim, the debut of the Go has been marred by some pretty downtrodden decisions on Sony's part, most notably the $250 price tag, an utter lack of compatibility with any previous PSP accessories, and no UMD conversion program. Will newcomers flock to the system? Will veterans upgrade? Read on for our full impressions!

Hardware

One of the most noticeable changes when you first pick up the Go is the size reduction -- no doubt helped by the complete removal of the UMD drive. The depth and height are only negligibly smaller than the PSP-2000, but as you can see from the image above, the width has been shrunk considerably, with the controls now tucked away via a new sliding mechanism that feels remarkably sturdy -- we gave it some slight prodding and it held up well to the coerced wear and tear. Its finish is a glossy black, and with it comes an insatiable appetite for remembering fingerprints, pretty much as bad as the black iPhone 3G. The 3.8-inch screen is just a tinge smaller, but it honestly wasn't anything we really noticed until we put it directly next to a PSP-2000. One thing we did clearly discern was what seemed like sharper colors, ones that didn't have the same overly-red hues as the PSP-3000. The battery's no longer removable, meaning no chance to bring a replacement for longer trips. On that note, we haven't done any rigorous battery life tests, but in our time the charge has managed to last about a day and a half doing some light gaming, about as long as our PSP-2000 would last. It's now adopted Bluetooth for syncing with headsets, and more importantly, 16GB of internal flash memory expandable with a Memory Stick Micro (M2) card.

The bottom row of buttons found on the older PSP models has been separated and moved all over the system. WLAN is now on the left edge, the start and select pair are on the same plane as the buttons hidden under the slider, the Home button is now to the left of the display (something that confused a number of PSP owners we showed), and the volume / screen brightness adjusters are on the top of the unit, which honestly we found inconvenient since we had to flip the portable over to see what we were pressing, whereas before we could keep our eyes on the screen the whole time. As far as the gameplay controls are concerned, the D-pad and buttons don't stick out nearly as much, and while a little smaller, we very much appreciated the extra clickiness of the Go. The analog nub, however, does suffer from being smaller, but it didn't take long to get used to.

Sony's done away with the mini USB port in lieu of a proprietary port that works for charging the unit, connecting to a PC via USB, and outputting video. Good thing it comes with the proper cable, but really, your old cables are now completely useless here. Any of your old add-on accessories -- notably the 1Seg tuner, GPS receiver, and camera -- won't work without the recently-announced Go Converter, which looks way too ridiculous for our tastes. Like we said earlier, your trusty Memory Stick Duo's been replaced by a slot for a Memory Stick Micro (M2). Frankly, if you have an old PSP and a library of UMDs, the Go probably isn't on your radar anyway -- and that's a shame, too, but all these little decisions add up to ultimately separate the experience from Sony's locked-in audience. Point is, if you're thinking of upgrading, be prepared to start from scratch.

Overall, though, we're impressed with what Sony's done here. In many ways we prefer the Go over past models -- it's sturdy, it's light, it doesn't skimp on screen clarity and the controls are more or less just as easy to get to and logically placed. If you can look past all the other details, it's hard not to love what's been done here.

Software

The firmware for the PSP Go is the same as with the older models and will be updated as such, but that said, it seems from the onset to have a couple of extra tricks. Most notable is the "Pause Game" feature selectable from the Home menu, which saves the state of your game and lets you go back into the XMB to navigate. Only one save can be had at a time, and once you try to open a new game, the old state is removed. A welcome addition, to be sure, but we can't help but wish the XMB was still more accessible mid-game, à la the PS3 system. The other feature is an analog clock and calendar when in the closed position, switchable by pressing the L and R buttons together... but really, beyond highlighting your birthday, there's nothing special going on here.

We've noticed some confusion over this, so to be clear, all PSN downloads will work with both the PSP Go and all previous models. Sure, there's a large number of PSP games coming to PSN this week, but rest assured, your older 1000, 2000, and 3000 editions will do the job just fine. Of course, on the PSP Go you don't have access to UMDs anymore, and while most retail games will be going to the PlayStation Network for download, that "good will" UMD-to-digital conversion program has been nixed in the US and severely limited in Europe, essentially rendering your old physical media collection useless with the device -- yeah, it's a major bummer, and it doesn't look like the company'll be changing its mind anytime soon. One good note, although it might have to do with saving instead onto internal memory (we didn't check with a Memory Stick Micro card), is that our PSN downloads finished considerably faster with the new model. There was no change in the download itself, but activation and installation time zipped by. We tried it with a few games on both the Go and 2000, even managing to shave off 45 seconds from a Rock Band Unplugged demo. See it for yourself in the video below.

Pricing

Obviously this is gonna be a big sticking point, and there's no easy way to look at it: the PSP Go is $249.99. That's just $50 less than a brand new, Blu-ray equipped PS3, and $50 more than a new PSP-3000 -- more if you factor out any bundled games -- and while a little clunkier in form factor, it's got all the same functions as the new model and can play UMDs. Pouring lemon juice on this proverbial paper cut, Sony's publicly stated its intention to maintain a "pricing parity" with the MSRP for its digital downloads, meaning games sold at retail as UMD will frequently be undercutting the PSN's pricing. We're not gonna lie, it's very nice to have the option of gaming without carrying a case of discs, but those few dollars extra per game are gonna add up -- not to mention no chance of trading in to GameStop later.

Wrap-up

If we were to just take a look at the hardware at face value, we'd say Sony has done some great work here. It's a sturdy, classier game system that we're not as shy about taking out of our pocket on long, public commutes. We really do like the portable, but there's no way to separate our feelings on the hardware from all the decisions surrounding the launch. That $50 upfront premium (more if you factor out the bundled PSP-3000 games) is more or less negated when you consider the cost of a 16GB Memory Stick Duo, something that the Go already has with internal flash memory, but long-term you're still gonna be paying more for every retail game bought digitally instead of on disc. That last bit is something that should make first-time buyers take heed, as lack of legacy support on same-generation games and accessories isn't our biggest gripe here. It's not as if Sony's oblivious to the perception -- in fact they've even gone on the record as saying there's a "certain premium" associated with the Go -- but we're really not getting enough here to justify it to our wallets.

New PSP exploit found in GripShift, works on PSP-3000

Now this is how you start a new year! New exploit, old game! Damn, it's so cool to actually see this beauty working - and on a PSP-3000 no less! The PSP scene was buzzing the other day when MaTiAz found an exploit (read: buffer overflow!) in the three year old game, GripShift.

Now then, the details: MaTiAz says that they've yet to find any further use for this, but it's still a new exploit. It could lead to further hacks, and for now, it's merely a proof of concept. Be that as it may, this is a great start, and a rather sweet find! Here's MaTiAz explaining the exploit:

GripShift has a buffer overflow vulnerability when loading savegames. The savegame contains the profile name which can be easily used to overwrite $ra. The savegame file is pretty big (25kB) so you have lots of space to put your code there. I wrote a simple blob of code to paint the framebuffer completely white (to just indicate that arbitrary code is running ). The return address is located at offset 0xA9 in the file. In this poc it points to 0x08E4CD50 (which is only a few bytes after the return address), and the code starts at 0xCC in the file.

It was tested on 4.01M33-2 with US version of GripShift (ULUS10040), and psplink.prx, usbhostfs.prx and deemerh.prx loaded (also without psplink and usbhostfs). The decrypted savegame (sorry, couldn't [be bothered to] get Shine's savegame tool working so it's in plaintext form) is in the SDDATA.BIN form which Hellcat's Savegame-Deemer produces (thanks to him, if the program didn't exist I wouldn't have bothered with this. ). Just copy the ULUS10040SAVE00 directory to /PSP/SAVEPLAIN/ and run the game. EDIT: yeah, don't forget to have Savegame-Deemer working, duh.

There are two versions of the exploit. The first which is the raw form from MaTiAz, the other one (v2), is a version encrypted by FreePlay. It's also been confirmed that it works all the way up to the recent CFW 5.02 GEN-A.

Custom Firmware 4.01 M33 Released

Ah, ha! Where we last left off Sony unexpectedly released firmware 4.01 while Dark_AleX was in the midst of developing 4.00 M33. Today, the continuation of our episode has come to a delightful end. Dark_AleX strikes with force and delivers the much anticipated custom firmware 4.01 M33.

4.01 M33 changes:

Bug fix: vshmenu didn't let change camera mode due to camera_plugin using select button. Fixed, now vsh menu will not be loaded when using the camera.
Recovery can now be translated, See how below. Translation to Spanish is auto included.
Updated the M33 SDK with a new function and sample, and released the psp-packer tool to compress prx's and PBP's in the ~PSP format.
The folder of 4.01 and higher homebrew will be GAME4XX so it won't need change on update.

Also mentioned in the readme: the 1.50 kernel add-on for the PSP Fat will be released tonight.

PSP Firmware 4.00 Decrypted…

The analysis report is in. The crew who delivered custom firmware 3.95 GEN have successfully decrypted and shared their 4.00 findings…

According to their report, many PRX's were in fact modified — pops, popsman, npdrm, np9660, mlnbridge, sysmem, umdcache, sysconf, video — just to name a few. Fortunately it's said these changes do not pose much of a problem for the development of future custom firmwares.

Whether Dark_AleX/M33 or MIRIAM release custom firmware 4.00; that's another story. I guess we'll find out one way or the other.

PicoDrive v1.40b Released: SEGA Genesis/CD Emulator Updated

Here’s one you may have possibly forgotten about, or perhaps you’ve never seen before… Step back into the good ol’ SEGA Genesis/CD days with developer Notaz’ PicoDrive version 1.40b.

This release is primarily bug fixes and whatnot; don’t expect any speed increase.

PicoDrive v1.40b changes:

Fixed sprite masking code. Thanks to Lordus for explaining how it works.
Added “disable sprite limit” option.
Added black level adjustment to display options.
Changed reset to act as ’soft’ reset.
Added detection for Puggsy (it doesn’t really have sram).
Some small timing adjustments.
Added support for SVP (Sega Virtua Processor) to emulate Virtua Racing. No recompiler for PSP version though.
Changed config file format, files are now human-readable. Game specific configs are now held in single file (but old game config files are still read when new one is missing).
Fixed a bug where some key combos didn’t work as expected.
Adjusted fast renderer to work with more games, including VR.
Fixed a problem where SegaCD RAM cart data was getting lost on reset.
PicoDrive now comes with a game config file for some games which need special settings, so they should now work out-of-the-box. More games will be added with later updates.

PSP piracy numbers on the rise

You guys must have a picture on how big piracy is when it comes to games. For Sony's handheld portable, we were able to get detailed information on some of the top games that have been downloaded over the internet.

With the Custom Firmware being downloaded so much, in effect, ISOs and CSOs get their fair share of downloads as well. Here's a shortlist on some of the games that have been hitting the highs of piracy in one of the torrent sites:

If you ask this writer, the numbers indicated above are ridiculously high, especially for Patapon since its one of the few US$ 20 games out there in the market. GoW raked in a lot of numbers ever since its release.

With this online piracy, official support for the software gets bogged down when you have other options of acquiring games, like downloading. Hardware sales, on the other hand, might get a boost because of the rampant amount of easily accessible games over the net.

So you see, there's a negative relationship between the two: one goes down, but the other goes up. Technically, these two should go hand-in-hand when rising in sales. But in reality, it's not really happening.

It's simple –

Download PSPTube 2008/02/28 and install it; if you haven't already
Copy DivX video file(s) to PSP/GAME/PSPTube/favorites; ensure the video file extension ends with .divx
Start PSPTube and cycle to favorites by pressing Select

Again, confirmed working on my Slim. I've only tried smaller sized videos — no full length features or anything of that nature. Try it out and let us know your experience below.

Update: M33-4!

galaxy.prx was changed to a new version that is giving problems with slow memory sticks. Reverted back to previous versions. This didn't only affect decrypted isos running in NP9660 mode.

Just when you thought Dark_AleX was gone, he's back on. 3.80 M33-3 and compatible PopsLoader (PSX/PSOne emulator) has arrived. Need I say more?

PSP: Getting a head start on everyone else

It's only the second week of the year, and already, the PSP is showing signs of a great year (as if last year wasn't great enough)!

Needing no introduction is the news of Dark AleX's custom firmware supposedly coming out this week. Why are so many people looking forward to it? Well, definitely not least of all is that last minute addition that DAX made: an update feature to bump up your PSP firmware (via WiFi) using the Network Update function on the XMB.

You really got to hand it to Dark AleX and Team M33. They just keep on surprising us with a lot of features that sweep us off our Phat and Slim feet.

The team hit a snag though. After a quick update care of - who we're starting to believe is DAX's official spokesperson and PR guy - Mathieulh, we learn of some technical problems they've been experiencing, and because of that, the release of CFW PSP 3.80 M33 will be temporarily delayed.

No specifics were revealed; with Math saying that Dark AleX wanted the CFW to be in utmost perfection once it hits the public. As always, we suggest you stay patient. Everyone would prefer a slightly delayed but flawless 'brew than an early half-baked one.

As we trudged on this week, more details have surfaced - and more importantly, we finally get to see the face of the Skype feature running on the PSP (gotta love that sleek Skype logo on the XMB!).

We also hear of the reason why Skype is only made available for the PSP-2000, and get to see the USB microphone and PSP Skype headset. If you've got all of those down pat, a good way to end all of this week's Skype hype is with nothing less than a video demonstration. Dude! Suh-weeet!

The PSP homebrew community is stirring, making its own waves to cause alarm for the big Sony mother ship. Getting a head start on the whole Skype PSP feature, Fanjita and the rest of the Noobz team released Furikup PSP SIP Phone this week - it's an alternative for PSP Skype.

As Noobz's post goes, they saw a couple of flaws that could result from the Sony's plan for the framework of their Skype system, so, they took matters into their own hands and released their homebrew alternative.

No, there's still no No Gravity (double negatives... hmm... meaning there is gravity?). FW 3.11 HEN & Upgrader/Downgrader Released

It was promised quite awhile ago, but here it is — a working firmware 3.11 homebrew enabler (HEN) & downgrader — as Noobz put it, "a solution to help people trapped on firmware 3.11 by Sony's dirty tricks". With that said, welcome to the new era of homebrew and custom firmwares, young Padawan learners. Note: you still require a UMD copy of Lumines.

As you may know, if you have a TA-082/TA-086 motherboard , then if you downgraded your PSP to v1.50, its idstorage keys will have been patched during downgrading to avoid bricking. The latest official Sony firmwares ( 3.30 onwards) detect this patch, and refuse to allow you to upgrade. Without a hardware solution, this can leave you trapped on v3.11 firmware, with no way to upgrade, and no way to downgrade.

Noobz, C+D release Pandora's Battery - unbricker for all PSPs

All for one, and one for all. A project promulgated under the collective Noobz - more officially branded as N00bz! - has given birth to another monumental development in homebrew: a PSP unbricker for every Sony PlayStation Portable. In short summary, it would perform the following:

You run a program on a homebrew-enabled PSP that will convert a standard PSP battery into a jigkick battery. Note that you can't then use that battery normally - so you should use a spare one.
You run a program to generate the unbricker memory stick image, built from the v1.5 update EBOOT (note that this, and the custom IPL, means the release is completely free of Sony copyright materials).
You run some programs on a PC to install the image to your memory stick.

Earlier, Fanjita announced that Noobz and C+D developers would release an unbricker for bricked PSPs as a result of a " faulty decryption algorithm," but the C+D devs thought they could do even better. Chalking up another feat to the Prometheus project, C+D created an unbricker for all PSPs, even without accessing the official software or hardware. But in essence, the feat wouldn't have made successful waves if the the following victories hadn't made ripples to start with:

Reverse engineering of the service (unbrick) mode
Development of a technique to change an ordinary battery into a service mode trigger battery (and back)
Development of custom IPL code along with a technique to sign that code as authentic

Of course, similar to a few CFW releases before, the unbricker was leaked before it was officially released, and C+D has yet to tie down the reasons for the leak. What was important to mention, however, is that the unbricker is completely free, and some people have tried to gain profits from the leaked unbricker over several websites around the world. Yet again, the early release of the unbricker was necessary, even if it was originally planned to unravel at the release of the PSP Slim.

SofiyaCat has released an updated version of PSPTube, the handy dandy homebrew application that lets you watch YouTube videos on your PlayStation Portable without the need to download and convert .flv files. For installation instructions, click on the "PSPTube" link above. Here's the changelog posted by SofiyaCat on our forums:

Ok I know that not many people use the location free player but for those of you that do, here's a guide to re-enable it in 3.40OE-A and 3.51M33. Don't use this guide if you want japanese/korean/chinese fonts as it gets rid of them.

NOTE:THIS GUIDE ACCESS' FLASH0. IT IS POSSIBLE TO SEMI-BRICK BUT IF YOU FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS TO A TEE IT SHOULD WORK.
Anyway with all that said on with the guide.

1. Follow my guide HERE to free up the space needed to re-enable the location free player.

2. Download these files HERE if you are on 3.400E-A or these files HERE if you are on 3.51M33.

3. Access the recovery menu by turning off your PSP completely then hold R when turning it back on.

4. Go to advanced/Toggle USB (flash0).
NOTE:If you are having trouble accessing flash0 follow my guide HERE to fix it.

5. Plug your PSP into your PC via usb cable.

6. Navigate to vsh/nodule then copy all the .prx files in the folder you just downloaded in there.

7. Now navigate to vsh/resource and put all the .rco files I gave you in there.

8. Exit recovery mode.

9. You should have location free player back on your psp.

Improvements in M33 NO- UMD driver (yeah, we know that sony one is better, but we still are working on our own driver to make it perfect as a challenge). The improvements:

Fixed a bug that caused incompatibility with ATV Offroad Fury Pro, Steel Horizons, Tony Hawk's Project 8 and probably more games.
Speed loading has improved, now M33 driver imitates better Sony one.

Automatic display fix for ta-082+ with brightness problems in 1.50 kernel.

M33 will autodetect ta-082+ with brightness problems, and will correct brightness properly.

Wlan fix is now done differently, patch is done in 3.51 kernel before going to 1.50 one.

For those that don't read well the readmes: we never would include in our files a sony prx! The fix was and is done simply with code. The 3.40 mention was to notice that the problem was not a M33 bug, but a problem caused by Sony.

4th level of brightness enabled on 1.5 kernel too now.
An option has been added to recovery, "Hard Reset on 1.50 homebrew". Use this, only if the wifi fix doesn't work with your psp still. It makes homebrew boot a bit slower.

Copy M33_7/EBOOT.PBP to the PSP/GAME150 directory on your memory stick. Load it, accept the update, and you're fully patched!

Downgrader for PSP v3.50 firmware

We said it would be done - although some people even said we couldn't - and lo... let there be a downgrader! Noobz are proud to present a downgrader for any PSP - even the one in the picture on the left :).

This downgrader is for v3.50 firmware, and includes a port of the Homebrew ENabler (HEN) for firmware 3.50. It will automatically detect all known PSP motherboard types, and do the appropriate steps to ensure a safe downgrade.

Before we get started, let's have the obligatory warnings:

Any downgrader carries some risk of permanently damaging your PSP. We've done everything we can to remove as much danger as possible, but if you choose to use this downgrader, you are accepting all of the risk involved. Nobody else will be held responsible for any damage to your PSP, howsoever caused.

Recent Sony official firmwares (3.30 onwards) have included checks that block upgrade from previously-downgraded PSPs with TA-082 or later motherboards. If you use this downgrader on such a PSP, you will lock yourself out of official firmware updates - although you will still be able to use new OE firmwares when they are released. We intend to release a tool to allow a return to official firmwares in the future.

This software is provided free of charge, so that you can use legitimate homebrew on your PSP. You are explicitly prohibited from selling it, or using it to pirate commercial games or applications. If you want to play a commercial game, do the decent thing and support the developers by buying it. If you don't, then YOU are contributing to the death of the PSP software industry.

To use this downgrader, you will need the following:

A PSP, upgraded to the official Sony v3.50 firmware. You should also set your language settings to "English".
A legal Lumines UMD, either the EU (ULES00043) or US (ULUS10002) version. The original, Platinum, or Greatest Hits versions are all fine. Support for the Japanese version will come soon.
Sufficient intelligence and english language skills to be able to carefully and throroughly read the instructions.
It would also help if you've previously run the Illuminati Hello World, so that you're familiar with how to run the Illuminati exploit.

For instructions on how to run the downgrader, see the Downgrader_HOWTO.txt file in the ZIP.

Future plans? Firstly, we intend to provide a solution for people who are stuck on firmware 3.10 or 3.11, unable to upgrade to 3.50 due to the new Sony checks. The exact format of that solution is still to be decided. We also intend to develop an eLoader for v3.50 HEN, so that those who do not want to downgrade will still be able to run some homebrew.

Maybe you're a bit hesitant to re-flash your PSP with another custom firmware. But aren't you still the least bit curious to see what it's all about? Now with absolutely no risk of bricking the PSP (if you can follow instructions carefully) you may emulate 1.62 IE-D with the use of BOOSTER's DevHook. It's reported to work with an older version, DevHook 0.46.

Working PSP Emulator for Windows Released

ECTOR has released Potemkin an open source HLE PSP Emulator. It is created and released under the GPL license. This is a great day for emulator fans! Sadly, the author doesn't have much time to work on it so he's released the sourcecode hoping someone will pick up where he left off.

Custom Firmware 3.30 OE-A Released

Mix a few bytes from Sony's most-loved 1.50 firmware update, add a few more bits from the latest 3.30 update, stir 'em together in a pot with Dark_AleX's magic firmware fusing wand, and what do you get? 3.30 OE-A… Oooooooh yeah, snap into an Open Edition!

Installation instructions:

- Copy oeupdmaker and oeupdmaker% to /PSP/GAME if you are in 1.50, or to /PSP/GAME150 if you are in any SE/OE version. Get the 1.50 and 3.30 Sony updaters (of any region, because all are currently the same), and copy them in the oeupdmaker directory with the names 150.PBP and 330.PBP.

Execute the program, and it will generate the DATA.DXAR file. Although the program will check its integrity at the end, you can also check it with the following checksums:

Patched a protection that prevents the firmware to load higher firmware modules.

popsloader note: it won't work on 3.30 OE due to sony rearranging again the module list of pspbtcnf_pops. (thanks sony for destroying my backwards compatibility again). I'll make a new version one of these days to support all current pops in 3.30 OE, 3.10 OE and maybe 3.03 OE-C.

piKey — A PSP Keyboard Driver

Fanjita and harleyg have released what they call "piKey". The introduction says it all…

πKey is a keyboard driver for your PSP. Its aim is to allow you to use just about any keyboard (or similar input device) as a natural method of input on your PSP.

Imagine being able to use your keyboard to control any PSP game or homebrew, and even the PSP's XMB menu and on-screen keyboard, automatically and without needing any changes to the other software. This is what πKey aims to give you.

This is an early release, demonstrating just some of the possibilities. The open, extensible framework allows πKey to be extended with new plugins, to allow support for different types of input hardware, and different input environments on the PSP.

It's reported to work best under Dark_AleX's custom firmware, and includes an installer for the easiest installation possible. Supported inputs are various infra-red keyboards and serial I/O via the PSP's headphone socket. Usability is straight forward; see the provided user guide (docs/user_guide.html) to get started.

As for the future, here is what's in store:

New plugins for:
- Input via Danzeff on-screen keyboard, for those who don't have any input hardware. The Danzeff keyboard is the most efficient software keyboard that I've seen.
- Output via Psprint and Danzeff keyboards, for homebrew that uses those already.
Proper UTF-8 support for non-US-ASCII characters.
An additional API for detecting keypress/release events - i.e. not just a character stream, but addressing individual keystates.
Support for loading πKey via HEN.
Improved configurability, for instance different keymapping in the CTRL plugin.

Three hacker teams unlock the PSP - BBC Interview

Computer hackers have scored a victory in their battle against Sony and the way the company controls its PlayStation Portable (PSP) handheld games console.

Sony sells its PSP with built-in software, known as firmware, which controls how the console operates.

The firmware locks many of the PSP's capabilities, preventing enthusiasts from writing their own programs, known as homebrew, and running them on the machine.

It also disables its ability to play some films which are not bought on special Sony PSP disks.

But last month three hacker teams - Noobz, Team C+D, and a group led by PSP hacker Dark Alex - co-ordinating their efforts over the internet, found a flaw in the most recently released version of the firmware - version 3.03.

Unlocking PSPs

Using this flaw they devised a way to unlock all PSPs, regardless of their age or the firmware running on it.

This development has been a cause for celebration in the PSP homebrew community, but caused alarm at Sony because unlocked PSPs can be used to play pirated PSP games.

"The problem experienced here is not with homebrew applications, but with hackers who pirate commercial titles," a Sony spokesperson said.

"Piracy is illegal and we strongly oppose any acts which either aide or profit from it."

But the hackers say piracy is not what motivates their teams to unlock the PSP.

"My aim is to enable as many people as possible to run homebrew programs," said Fanjita, a member of the Noobz team.

He added: "Everyone has the right to do what they want with their own hardware. Piracy does upset me, and because what we are doing opens the way to piracy it's harder to justify it morally.

"But our stance on piracy is clear, and we hope to be role models. Sony have never been in touch with me, so I am confident that what we are doing is legal."

Hackers unveiled

Fanjita - real name David Court - is very different from the popular hacker stereotype of the socially inept teenaged geek working all night in his bedroom.

A married man of 34, he is an accomplished professional programmer who writes server software for large telecommunications companies for a living. He spends an hour or two a night hacking PSP software in his Edinburgh home, and is also a martial arts enthusiast.

Dark Alex fits much more comfortably into the hacker mould.

A student from Spain, his hacker moniker derives from his real name, Alejandro, and a liking for all things gothic, he says. His interests are Japanese Manga comics and cats, but PSP hacking is his main hobby.

"It takes up a good part of my spare time, more or less what some other people may spend watching TV," he said.

"I mainly do it because it is fun to research the internals of the operating system of a machine made by a big company. I am also against DRM (digital rights management - a type of electronic copy protection) in any of its forms, and against restrictions that make a device unable to show its true potential."

Not just pirates

Dark Alex said that although his work makes piracy easier because it enabled PSP owners to play copied games, this was not his responsibility.

"I think it is up to users to make the correct decisions about how to use my software," he said.

"I believe in the presumption of innocence, unlike the media companies."

There were many quite legitimate reasons why you might want to copy a game you own from its original disk, Dark Alex said.

"You can transport a number of games on a single memory stick, which is very convenient, and the games actually load faster. And most important for me, these games can actually be modified, allowing users to customise their games," he said.

"I've seen great things done in this area, like people changing the music of games, or making full translations into their own language."

Breaking the code

Whenever Sony releases a new version of its PSP firmware, the three hacker teams compete to see who can decode and examine it first.

They then collaborate to see if they can find any way of unlocking it.

This task has been made harder in recent months as Sony has introduced a new and more secure motherboard in the latest PSPs, and because Sony's firmware has become increasingly sophisticated in response to the hackers' efforts.

"When each new version of the PSP firmware comes out we can see that Sony are putting in countermeasures against the things we have been doing," Court said.

In this case it turned out that a well known mistake in the way a PSP game called Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories was written provided the hackers with a suitable "exploit".

By loading the game it was possible to get access to a restricted part of the firmware called the kernel, and an oversight on the part of Sony's firmware writers then allowed the hackers to run a special program of their own devising.

An upgraded 'downgrade'

This "downgraded" the PSP to an earlier version of the firmware which allows homebrew to be used.

The drawback of this early firmware is that it won't run the latest games, but this problem was quickly overcome by Dark Alex, who wrote his own firmware, called Dark Alex's Open Edition, with the help of a fellow hacker known as Booster.

With this firmware installed, the PSP is completely unlocked, but also has all the features of the latest firmware.

Within days of the release of the Noobz team's downgrader and Dark Alex's Open Edition firmware, Sony updated its firmware, fixing the flaw which makes unlocking possible.

Anyone buying a new PSP with this firmware installed will be therefore be unable to unlock their console - at least until Noobz, Team C+D and Dark Alex and his crew find another exploit and the whole cat-and-mouse game played by Sony and the hacker teams repeats itself.

Apparentyl Team C+D have done it again!

To dump the firmware open up the Eboot with psp brew or PBP unpacker.

Extract the DATA.PSAR to the root of your memory stick.
Copy psar_dump2 and psar_dump2% to your GAME150 folder. (Or whatever you kernel is set to)
Launch it from the game menu.
Select what option you wish to have. Then it will dump the contents to the root of your memory stick.

Changes in 3.10 OE-A:

- Change from 3.03 firmware to 3.10

- 4th level of brightness (aka battery eater) can now be selected also without ac adaptor.

- Changes in hen core:

* Static user elf's can now be executed in the 3.10 kernel. (this includes snes user version

* Tyranid's patch (added in 3.03 OE-C) consequences was not explained very well in the changelog of 3.03 OE-C:

Yes guys, I am not kidding! Remember when I said that the newest firmware required some magic on the part of Team C+D? Well, I guess it didn't take them very long to finish their work. And in this case, it was another fine piece of work- You can call it the Firmware 3.10 decrypter by the way!

So now that we have the firmware decrypted, on Day 0 no less(!), the main focus now shifts to guys like Dark_AleX, Mathieulh, Booster and the Noobz team who will be responsible for turning this firmware on its head in a few days. Great things are coming, you just wait! Anyways, here's their nfo in full glory:

With that out of the way, we can now patiently wait for things like Devhook, a new custom firmware by Dark_AleX and if someone can find and exploit in the firmware, even a downgrader! OK, so the downgrader part is speculation, but I donâ€™t think you guys will have to wait long for a new version of Devhook or DAX's CFW.

Anyways, I'll stop talking now. The file has been uploaded and it also contains the source. Start decrypting your firmwares and get ready!

2.81 - 3.03 Downgrader

Fanjita may have told you guys what to do with a non-homebrew capable PSP, but now it appears that everyone can get in on the homebrew fun! The "goofy exploit" which exists in firmwares 2.00 to 3.03 was found on Friday, January 25, 2007, a date which you'd think might go down in the PSP homebrew history. But it probably won't because despite their seven-day ETA, the Noobz team has once again fortified its position at the top of the homebrew coding ladder with a 3.03 downgrader - just three days after the exploit was found!

Some call it magic, others call it an act of god, but whatever the reason for it, PSP gamers all across the world can now downgrade their consoles to the magic of homebrew-capable 1.5, and then if they wish to do so, upgrading to homebrew-capable custom firmware. All you need is a PSP running firmware 3.03 (if not then update to 3.03 using the update EBOOT found here) the downgrader files and the 1.50 EBOOT as well as an unpatched version of Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories.

Unpatched versions of Liberty City Stories contain the 2.0 update, whereas patched versions contain higher updates. If your copy of LCS has an update higher than 2.0 on it, then you will have to find an unpatched UMD to proceed. There's no need to worry if you have a TA-082 PSP as the downgrader will check your motherboard and patch it if necessary. Note the downgrader will not let you proceed without patching if your motherboard requires it.

Not only has Noobz released a 3.03 downgrader but they've also managed to release a 3.03 HEN (Homebrew Enabler) for the PSP. This means that those of you who aren't too sure that you want to downgrade can still play homebrew on 3.03. This does not flash your PSP, but by running HEN, it installs a patch in your PSP's memory, that allows you to run homebrew almost as if you had a v1.5 PSP. This patch remains in place until you fully turn off your PSP - it will survive the PSP being placed into sleep mode. You run the HEN application just as you do the downgrader using Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories.

To use this simply download the 3.03 HEN files from the download links below and copy them to your PSP. Then run your unpatched version of GTA:LCS and the patch will apply itself. It will be stored in RAM and will stay there until you reset your PSP. Putting the PSP in sleep mode will not remove the patch. This is based on the source for HEN 2.71 provided by Dark_Alex, so the Noobz team would like to thank him for the code and the help. Additional credits go to Booster, Team C + D for the registry kernel exploit and Mathieulh for the help provided to Dark_AleX.

PLEASE READ: This downgrader has been tested by the highly-successful Noobz team and has been proven to work, however there is a small chance that bricking could occur during the process of downgrading. QJ.Net and the Noobz team are not responsible for any damage which may happen to your PSP by this application. Can you also note before use that it is possible to brick using this downgrader if you downgrade and then update to 3.03 and then downgrade again. The advice from Fanjita right now is to only use this once. If you update to 3.03 again after using the downgrader then we suggest you leave it there to prevent your PSP from bricking.

Now we've got the boring bit over with, we can move onto the downgrade process itself. Here's QJ's "how to" for downgrading from 3.03 to 1.50:

1. Update to firmware 3.03. If already have this firmware then proceed to step 2.

2. Open the 3.03 downgrade file and copy the contents of the folder MS_ROOT to the root of your memory stick.

3. Open the 1.5 update and rename the EBOOT.PBP to UPDATE.PBP then copy it to /PSP/GAME/UPDATE/
Make sure not to overwrite PSP/GAME/UPDATE/EBOOT.PBP

4. Load Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories (unpatched)

5. It should get to loading save game, clear the screen, the screen should fill with a light blue color and then reset the PSP
(If this does not happen see below)

6. Check that HEN is running by going to system settings then System Information and it should show up as system version 303 HEN

7. If it is showing up as 3.03 HEN then go to the memory stick and run the x.yz update

8. Before the downgrader does anything to your PSP it will ask for you to agree to what it is doing
If you no longer want to continue press the Right Shoulder Button (R-TRIGGER).

9. Once you have agreed to start the downgrade do not unplug the PSP

10. Once finished the PSP will ask you to press X, after pressing it will reset it self.

11. If it comes up saying that the settings are corrupt press X to continue.

12. Enjoy your new shiny 1.5 PSP.

What do you do once you have firmware 1.5? Well, you can either start downloading homebrew games from our QuickJump Downloads site and use DevHook to run your current homebrew games or use the more popular which is to upgrade to Dark_Alex's 3.03 OE-C Custom firmware. You remember that the only thing holding us back from a downgrader for v3.03 was the lack of a user-mode exploit?

Well, we don't like to be held back from anything, so we went back to basics and looked over some of the old exploits. And what do you know? We found one!

We did a little digging into the old GTA exploit, and discovered that it hadn't been properly patched after all. We'll leave it as an exercise for the interested reader to figure out exactly how we got past the patch (and to give Sony a little while longer before the head-slapping "Doh!" moment ).

But the short version is that we can now run code again via Grand Theft Auto : Liberty City Stories. You want some proof? Check out the Goofy Hello World download below. Here's a little screenshot:

Some details on how to use it:

You need an original, unpatched GTA:LCS game. See here and here for tips on how to check your version, although it can be confusing. The new copies that you find in the shops now will not work.
This only works for Liberty City Stories, not Vice City Stories.
Extract the files from the ZIP into the /PSP/SAVEDATA folder on your memory stick.
Start the GTA game, and enjoy the feeling of freshly-minted homebrew :D

And what of the future? Well, we should have a 3.03 downgrader ready within the week, using this exploit. Watch this space!

What should I do with my non-homebrew PSP?

Over and over again, we get questions from people asking things like:

When will there be a 2.81 downgrader?
Should I sell my 3.03 PSP and buy a 1.5?
Should I upgrade my 2.81 to 3.03?

This article is an attempt to provide some balanced answers to those questions.

Here are the facts:

It looks like the Team C+D kernel mode exploit will work all the way up to v3.03 - the relevant code seems to be unchanged.
It's very likely that Sony will patch that exploit in the next firmware.
As soon as a user-mode exploit is found for 2.81-3.03, it should be possible to get homebrew running on those firmwares.
It looks like the current 2.80 downgrader will probably work on v3.03, once we can run homebrew on that firmware.
Dark_AleX's OE firmwares are the best platform for homebrew users, and it seems likely that it will be possible to keep updating OE for the latest firmwares shortly after they are released.
It has historically always been easier to downgrade lower firmwares.

So what does all that mean for 2.81-3.03 owners?

Well, right now things are more hopeful for you than they have been for bleeding edge firmwares for a long time. We're only 1 step away from being able to downgrade your PSP and move it onto an OE firmware. It's almost certain that a downgrader will eventually come - but no-one can accurately predict when that might be, so please don't ask!
Upgrading to the next firmware release would be homebrew suicide. Don't expect any sympathy if you choose to upgrade as soon as the next firmware is released - if you wait a short time, you can probably have it as an OE version instead.
Upgrading your firmware even from 2.81 to 3.00 is probably not a great move - you may delay your ability to downgrade when a downgrader finally comes.

One final note - if you have more money than patience, then your best bet for getting homebrew on your non-homebrewable PSP is to simply sell it, and buy a downgradeable PSP. The difference in price is not very large these days, and so it's not really a hard thing to do if you really can't wait.

Dark Alex has Released 3.03 OE-A

Today one of my friends told me that DAX has released 3.03 OE-A, and then linking me to a forum for the download. Well it's here folks so no more waiting! Included in the download package is the flasher, the update maker, popstation, and docmaker. What is docmaker you say? It allows you to create your own manuals for your converted PSX Eboots. In this version it also supports compression of ISO's. Steps to install are:

Copy oeupdatemaker and oeupdatemaker% to /PSP/GAME if you are in firmware 1.50, or to
/PSP/GAME150 if you are in 2.71 SE or 3.02 OE.
Get the 1.50 and 3.03 sony updates, and put them in the oeupdatemaker folder with the names
150.PBP and 303.PBP.
Run oeupdatemaker. It will generate the dxar file DATA.DXAR, whhich has the following hashes:MD5: 03186D46D2F1B0ACD923098BEBC87281
SHA1: 3C80833A970EEA16A94D74DAFF6220889A9CEE4A
Copy 303oeflasher and 303oeflasher% to /PSP/GAME if you are in 1.50, or to
/PSP/GAME150 if you are in 2.71 SE or 3.02 OE.
Move the DATA.DXAR file to the 303oeflasher.
Run the program. When it finishes, it will ask you to reinit the psp. When you do that, you will be
in 3.03 OE-A.

If you bricked your psp as a result from the 3.03 OE-A installer there is a fix for it. KLM software has also released a another Easy installer with the fix applied to it.

After venturing over to QJ and reading some of the front page articles. picked up on this piece . Here is the forum thread that discusses this also. Basically it says that Dark Alex has begun work on his newest version of custom firmware entitled "3.03 OE-A". Playing PS1/PSX Eboot's will still be an option of course! It seems we will now be able to compress our PS1/PSX ISO's before converting them to Eboot format. It is rumored to come out before the weekend ends so let's all keep our fingers crossed. GO DAX!

BTW, I finally update my 1.5 fw to 3.02 OE-B, it was easy, just run the update like a normal homebrew, then after 2-3 min, shut off the PSP, PSP will do a reset and then you are on 3.02 OE-A, you can see the XMB is just like the Sony 3.02 firmware, except you can run homebrew and load ISO. with a quick update 2 sec. of 3.02 OE-B, you be able to run good old PSX game on your PSP, cool stuff!

Devhook v0.52 Released

Only a day after TA-082 PSP's are downgradable, Booster hits the scene with a new Devhook, sporting the version of v0.52. I'm wondering if this program will ever reach the big numero uno (number one), but that may never happen, but there is another number concerning this release besides the version number, the new maximum firmware emulation! This new iteration of Devhook can emulate firmware 3.03, but you will still have to use the psar dumper (separate from devhook)

This new version of Devhook however does not fix the Pop's emulation issues on the emulated firmware, but it does emulate the majority of 3.03 which would aid in the execution of 3.03-only UMD's (not produced yet, but will be most likely in the near future). The installation for this new version is similar to the installation of the previous devhooks, just you need a new psar dumper, of which is bundled (thanks vb_master) with this new Devhook download.

So, just as we were unwrapping our downgrader for 2.71 TA-082 PSP's, Booster surprised us like Dark_Alex and his little elves (Mathieulh and Harleyg). As 2006 is coming to a close we are left with some of the greatest PSP homebrew advancements, and what a better way to celebrate the end by saying "thank you" to all those who helped to make it one of the greatest! Show you are thankful and post so in our comments, I'm sure everyone would enjoy to hear that! So, you can download one of the year's greatest applications (Devhook v0.52) below and read on how to install it -

Installation

1) Download 3.03 Firmware Eboot (below)
2) Download Devhook v0.52 PSAR Dumper from C D (bundled below)
3) Extract all Files
4) Move PSAR_Dumper2 and PSAR_Dumper2 to PSP/Game directory
5) Download PBP Unpacker (below)
6) Install it on computer and run after installation and click "Open"
7) Navigate to the 3.03 eboot file and open it, then extract the files to any directory
8) Move the DATA.PSAR file to the root of your memory stick
9) Open up the extracted devhook folder and move dh, fbm and PSP into the root of your memory stick
10) Disconnect your PSP and run the PSAR dumper from your memory stick via the XMB and follow the on-screen instructions (press X to dump)
11) Connect your PSP to your PC and copy the newly created F0 folder (root of your memory stick) and move it to dh/303/
12) Run Devhook v0.52 now and go down to flash install (uninstall the flash configuration if you have previously installed a previous firmware) and click install configuration (first option I believe). Hold O for a few seconds to confirm.
13) Now go to firmware and select 3.03 and boot up Devhook, good luck and have fun!

It will change some keyes of your idstorage needed to downgrade the ta-082.

- The generic downgrader will also need 75% battery. IT will downgrade your psp to 1.50.

- At the end, it will ask you to press X to restart the psp. Do it.

- If all went fine, you'll receive a blue screen telling you to press O. Do it, and reenter your settings.

- If things didn't go that fine, you'll have a non-functional psp, aka brick.

Firmware 3.02 OE-B released!

3.02 OE-B! As you're probably aware OE-B allows the emulation of any PSX (PSOne) title; whether it be downloaded from the online PS3 store or obtained by some other means. You'll need 3.02 OE-A flashed first in order to upgrade.

Quoted from the Readme:

This is the update from OE-A to OE-B.

Place the folder OEB_UPDATE inside / PSP/GAME150 and run it.

The update will take a very little time, since it only updates the files needed.

The new addition of this update is the ability of playing your own psx games, using the provided
tool (popstation) to convert them.

Although, a feature that was in OE-A and i forgot to comment:

You can use plugins in psx games. Just create a file called pops.txt inside seplugins, with the
path of your modules.

Have a look at "psx_readme.txt" and "popstation/readme.txt" for more information regarding the conversion of PSX titles.

A: They use compression. Because the algorithm of compression is not still cracked, compressed isos are not supported yet.

Here you go, Dark_AleX with no hesitation, a ported DevHook v0.51 launcher for 2.71 [TA-082] users running HEN-D ! What else is there to say? Nicely done.

Instructions:

With devhook 0.45 for 2.71, emulate 1.50 and use psardumper to extract the firmware/s you want (remember that from 2.80 and greater this is specific to each psp so you can't just download a prepared dump).

The rest of the instructions are the same that for 1.50.

This is what I did and it worked first time.

1. I already had HEN-D and the Dev Hook Launcher installed with 1.5 firmware files
2. I installed the .51 port so all the files were there 3.01 etc
3. I installed the 3.01 Firmware installer
4. I put the 3.01 eboot in the root.
5. I loaded the 4.X launcher port to emulate firmware 1.5
6. I ran the firmware installer from the emulated 1.5
7. I did a hard reboot.
8. I loaded the 0.51 port and select 3.01 firmware and the default cpu clock and an ISO I had and it worked fine.

Here are easy to follow instructions, posted by Steven-style:

1. Remove all previous DevHook files from your memory stick.
2. Copy the DevHook 0.51 package to the root of your memory stick. This would be ms0:/ and the two folders should be “dh” and “PSP”.
3. Download the 3.01 update (search Google) or PSP Hacks.
4. Get PSARDumper
5. Extract the DATA.PSAR from the 3.01 update you’ve downloaded with a program such as PBP Unpacker. Once thats done, copy the DATA.PSAR over to the root of your memory stick.
6. Run PSARDumper on your PSP, once its loaded up press X to dump a sigchecked 3.01. Once its done your PSP will return to the main menu.
7. Open up your memory stick, you will now see that there is an “F0″ folder in the root. Move that to the “301″ folder inside of “dh”.
8. Go into the “301″ directory, move the reboot.bin into the f0 folder.
9. Launch up DevHook and go to “FLASH ROM” settings, choose install dh to flash1. DO NOT touch any of the other settings unless you know what you’re doing.
10. Finally, choose “FIRMWARE” from the DevHook menu and pick 3.01. Now start DevHook and you should be good to go!

Noobz, a popular PSP coder, proudly announced that the newly released 3.01 firmware has been decrypted. What does that mean? It means the homebrew community is working harder, and faster, than ever, to keep up with Sony. With the firmware decrypted, hopefully it won't be too long until something tangible appears for homebrew users.

So when do you think firmware 3.02 will come out? Tomorrow?

PiMPStreamer 0.76 - now with FLV and Youtube support

Bringing out yet another kickass update to PiMPStreamer is none other than our favorite dev, DickyDick1969. In all seriousness though, there's a lot to look forward to in this small update. Even though he was busy with other things (hint?), he was gracious enough to add in FLV support for PiMPStreamer, along with Youtube RSS support. and if your primary means of wasting time involves watching stupid, but funny videos on Youtube, you'll feel right at home with this new feature.

PiMPStreamer now supports the FLV format.
Also special support has been added for YouTube.com

Just remove your old PiMPStreamer.INI prior to installing the update. One small note though, when you drop the Youtube RSS link into PiMPStreamer, it will take a little while to download and parse the location and FLV file. And just for the record, nothing has changed on the PSP side of PiMPStreamer, this is just an update for the PC server.

Generic downgrader from Dark_Alex

Dark_Alex won't stop amazing me with his genuie contribution to the psp scene, this time, he released a generic downgrader for all firmware up to 2.71!
Also, He made a homebrew enabler for 2.71, that mean that you won't have to go be on fw1.5 in order to play homebrew anymore!

This tool enables a 2.71 running HEN C to downgrade to any version from 1.50-2.70 or to

Theoretically, TA-082 users could downgrade to 2.70/2.60/2.50.
Ta-082 users: DO NOT TEST anything below 2.50.

This downgrader is safer, faster, and a lot easier to use than the previous downgraders.
It also makes a clean firmware install, since this time there is a format of flash0
(just like sce updaters do).

Instructions:

- Copy the contents inside MS_ROOT to the root of your memstick.

- Get the EBOOT.PBP of the update you want to install, and copy it with the name of "UPDATE.PBP" to

Another day, another dollar… And lets not fail to mention a 2.71 to 1.50 downgrader!

Renowned PSP developer Dark_AleX, along side with Mathieulh & Yoshi, have managed to successfully downgrade a non-TA-082 PSP running FW 2.71 - thanks to the recently discovered TIFF exploit! The process entails several steps [and precautions] which closely resemble the same procedure taken to downgrade 2.50/2.60. With that in mind, it's probably safe to assume someone will take the liberty in creating an "Easy 2.71 -> 1.50 Downgrader."

Copy the files inside MS_ROOT to the root of your memory stick.
Wait someone with 1.50 to pass you a folder called DOWNDATER and copy it to the root of your memstick.
It is recomended that you have the psp at more than 50% batteery and connected to AC
Go to the xmb photo viewer.
At this point will one of the following things:

You'll see a full red screen. This indicates that the downdater is doing its job. Wait for it to finish. When it finish it will crash on purpose. Restart your psp manually and you'll probably have a 1.50 if nothing went wrong.
You don't see the red screen. This indicates that the downdater code has not started to execute. (even if the memstick blinks(or no), it doesn't matter! if the screen is not red, you can safely restart the psp at this point).

This happen because of inestability in the tiff.
Don't worry, just restart the psp and keep trying until you reach the red screen of downdate.
The downdater code is NEVER executed partially. It's either executed totally or nothing.

It depends of "luck" but usually the downdater will start to execute in a average of 1/10 times.
Things that may increase the probabilities:

- A fresh formatted memory stick.
- A 32 MB memory stick (and fresh formatted)

REMEMBER: THIS DOES NOT WORK WITH TA-082 MOTHERBOARDS!

Much respect for NOPx86 for discovering the libtiff exploit; Fanjita, Skylark, and everyone else involved with this phenomenal breakthrough!

Sony was a little lax about making sure we knew they were going pink with Pink on the PSP today, too, but it does indeed look like we can chalk up another color for the portable. Apparently the singer's just doing the usual sponsored / co-branded business, releasing the P!nk Limited Edition PSP with headphones, remote, 32MB Memory Stick, but what raised a couple eyebrows over yonder is the fact that she's not signed with Sony, and what's more Sony will also offering Pink downloads on their YourPSP site. Anywho, from what we understand Sony pulled the official release, so they're apparently not yet prepped to discuss the ramifications of the PSP getting femmed out even though we now know it will run you €229 or £169 when it debuts October 27th. Devhook running into legal problems!

With all the success of Devhook, I guess it was getting too uncomfortable for Sony on their comfy chairs. It seems that pspsoftware. ddo.jp, the actual release site of Devhook has received a Cease and Desist Order from Sony with regards to distributing Devhook.

Now my Japanese isn't something to write home about, so I'll leave it to 0okm, who has got the translation covered. Here's the translated text:

"Reboot_1.50.bin is the copyrighted material by SONY, that is mixed with DevHook0.43fix.
Warning from SCE to those who up-load DevHook0.43fix comes.
Moreover, please annul it at once when downloaded 0.43fix is preserved at hand, and it uses it.
Not seeing this knows and there is a possibility to use, too.
Please inform me of this when there is an owner in surroundings.
Moreover, the main body of DevHook and the relation file of all versions were deleted from this site.
As a result, opening DevHook on this site to the public is completely stopped."

Now you don't need to have a masters degree in English to make sense of that. Sony has taken action on PSPSoftware.ddo.jp for distributing Devhook and have also requested them to notify someone at Sony when the uploader ( Booster) is online.

One thing's for sure, Booster will need to find a new place to host his awesome homebrew. But seeing this happen, I wouldn't be surprised if SCE/Sony start going after sites who are hosting Devhook. Well, let's just wait and see how everything pans out. A small suggestion by me would be to download the latest versions of Devhook as soon as possible, just in case everyone is forced to remove them off their sites.

The graphical interface has been totally revamped to make things even simplier, and it no longer requires the Visual Basic runtime files; however, you now need the .NET Framework 2.0 from Microsoft.

Device Hook v0.43 Released!

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you… *drum roll* BOOSTER's Device Hook Sample Launcher v0.43 - now supporting 2.60 FW emulation! With the aid of the recent tools made available: 2.7X PRXDecrypter, 'reboot.bin' decompressor - you're now able to take advantage of all the features 2.60 has to offer on your [recently downgraded] 1.50! You even have the option to boot 2.60 required UMD's! Unfortunately no 2.7X support yet; however, I would imagine it's not far away… hang tight!

DevHook v0.43 offers a few other changes - mainly changes/fixes to improve stability and whatnot… The only cosmetic changes you'll notice is the menu and display has been revamped.

Of course you'll require a decrypted 2.60 FW dump in order to successfully emulate it with DevHook. We currently aren't hosting that but you may see it pop-up shortly. In the meantime you can use the tools mentioned above to create your own.

Working 2.5/2.6 Downgrader BETA!!

Remember, this is still a BETA and could possibly brick your PSP! There are a lot of reported successions though! Use this downgrader at your own risk!

Requirements:

Your PSP CANNOT be a TA-082 (If you do have this PSP version, it may result in a brick)
Your PSP CANNOT be a factory 2.50/2.60 PSP! It had to have been updated once before from a previous version or the downgrader will not work!

Instructions:

Extract the files form the download below into the ROOT of your memory stick . And select yes to replace any files.
Run GTA and load the eLoader.
In the eLoader menu, choose the downdater test. (WARNING: the program won't output any display and any warnings, it will initiate the downgrader process inmediately.)
The memory stick light will flash indicating the PSP is being flashed from the files on the memory stick.
The screen WILL NOT display any info or anything for safety purposes!
Wait for the memory stick light to stop flashing and wait at LEAST 1 minute!
Now turn off your PSP after waiting enough time and making sure the memory stick light is no longer flashing.
Turn your PSP back on. If all worked correctly, you can now enjoy the full benefits of firmware 1.5! If things didn't go so well, you might still have 2.6 or even worse a paperweight. YOU TOOK THE RISK!

Kernel Mode on Firmware 2.50 & 2.60!

Breaking news - full kernel mode access on firmware 2.50 and 2.60! Two programmers by the names of hitchhikr and Neural have released a proof-of-concept EBOOT which takes advantage of a new exploit discovered in Sony's 2.50 and 2.60 firmware revisions.

What does this mean? Well it means all the lovely homebrew compatible with firmware version 1.50 only ( Device Hook, DAX, iR Shell , etc…) will now be available on 2.50/2.60! Please note, this exploit does not exist in FW 2.0 and 2.01. And you will require Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories in order to execute this EBOOT.

The proof of concept simply creates a kernel memory dump in the root of your memory stick.

PiMPStreamer v0.65 Now With Subtitle Support

The recent release of jockyw2001's PMP VLC Player may have been one of DickyDick1969's inspirations in improving his homebrew app, the PiMPStreamer. This time, he has updated the latest PiMPStreamer v0.65. What is new? Now, the app sports subtitles! Again, this update is for firmware 1.5 only, but he is really working hard to bring out the goodness of PiMPStreamer to other firmwares, so watch out for updates.

Although the team he is rooting for to win the World Cup (The Netherlands ) loss in part because of some questionable calls by the officials, he was able to shrug it off to bring to life this update. According to the good developer, "I merged the code from Raphael so there is now a SUB supported PiMPStreamer. At special request from a great donater. To use SUB files, place the sub file in the PSP/VIDEO and play the movie. If your movie to be streamed is called sometitle.avi the subtitle file has to be named sometitle.avi.SUB. It only works with full fps streaming and without time skip." Nice!

Undiluted Platinum: Install Diagrams and Compatibility Update! - Installation Guide

UPDATE #2: The Undiluted Platinum Installation guide has just arrived, and even they not that the installation is for "skilled professionals only, and should not be attempted by amateurs" (Check images below). The installation guide is in a .pdf format, so you will need Adobe Reader to view this.

UPDATE #1: We've got diagrams for chip installation on TA-081 motherboards! Scroll down, guys! (The diagrams for the TA-080s will follow shortly.)

This just in hot off the presses from the dudes and dudettes behind the eagerly anticipated first PSP modchip, "Undiluted Platinum." Finally we have some concrete information on where the chip stands as far as PSP compatibility goes.

"The U.P. team have released the first set of installation diagrams for their upcoming modchip.The diagrams show installation position of the FPC cables , traces which require soldering of wire to and usage procedure of the installation aids. The first release is for Motherboard TA-079, with TA-080 and TA-081 to follow tomorrow. TA-082 is not supported, however, they seem to be limited to Asia and have 2.6 or above firmwares. We believe that overall numbers of TA-082 as a proportion compared with TA-079, TA-080 and TA-081, should be quite limited."

If that all sounds and looks like Sanskrit to you, fear not, we're here to transambulate the kooky techspeak for ya. Apparently 0okm was right when he stated that PSP's with TA-082 motherboards wouldn't be able to benefit from the sweet chip's modular magic, but don't panic, here's the skinny:

The chip will work with all PSP's that contain motherboards with model numbers TA-079, TA-080 and TA-081. However, the installation of the chip across these three motherboards will differ, the images below show the installation of the chip on a TA-079 motherboard.

As promised, here are the diagrams detailing installation on TA-081 boards (you can also download these from our DL site, have a look at the link down below):

The current iteration of the U.P. chip will NOT work on newer PSP's with motherboard models TA-082. The makers of Undiluted Platinum are however aware of this fact and according to our sources are working on a second generation chip to rectify the situation. As mentioned in the quote above, the number of PSP's with TA-082 motherboards is most likely very small, and most current PSP owners (especially in the states) should be in the clear and out of the woods.

This is NOT something we recommend to anyone without any previous soldering or modding experience. As a reminder, USA based ModChipStore.com will be providing 3 services for those of you that are lazy who don't have the time, or are afraid of breaking their PSP by installing this.

Swaploit one year anniversary!

A lot of you may have forgotten, but today is a very important one for the homebrew community. Exactly a year ago, a Spanish group carrying the name PSP-DEV provided a light to the many who were blinded in the dark; paved the way for those who were lost; and guided them to find the light.

I may be getting a little too dramatic, but let's just say that it's a carryover of the joy I, and I'm sure all of you, had when CybBlade, Pawstick and Killer-X brought to us the very first exploit for FW 1.50 - Swaploit. June 15, 2005 marked the date when the said method first serve American PSP users the very good taste of homebrew for their PSP.

It must be taken into note that right after the Hello World exploit for FW 1.0, before PSPs were launched outside of Japan, Sony released their FW update thus blocking homebrew for gamers around the world who just bought theis handhelds. Swaploit, a method that may be considered medieval in terms of modern technology, answered the prayers of many to have emulators and homebrew for their newly blocked PSPs.

Crude yet very effective, Swaploit worked by swapping Memory Sticks while starting the application. It may not have basked long in terms of popularity among homebrew users (a week later the same guys released KXploit), but it still holds a very special place in most PSPanatics' hearts because it was the very first tool that gave us the power to go up against the updates, giving us the power to use our PSP the way we want.

It has given us the hope that if an exploit could have been made in the very first update, it'll only take time before other FWs are hacked as well. That very same achievement is the very thing that makes other users hold on to the dream of having another tool to use against the latest update. We already have the Devhook, and pretty soon we'll have the modchip, things are indeed very looking bright for us - no small thanks to Swaploit.

Needless to say Sony has sent a endless stream of firmware updates at the PSP's dedicated fans, thats 6, no make that 7 upgrades to the PSP firmware to date. Don't get me wrong, sometimes the updates are fairly welcome. With the web browser for instance, other times however the update is minor, and somewhat lackluster, even making gamers question the necessity of another update. Think back to yourself, how many times did you contemplate to update your Playstation Portable to a newer firmware simply because Sony required you to have the latest firmware in order to shake down hustlers and go down in history as Liberty City Stories #1 Gangsta. We know we have many times.

Well as they say, if your dreams are not extravagant then they may be answered. Enter Device Hook 0.41 Sample Launcher. Dev Hook is a device redirecting driver created by Booster. The application or firmware emulator as one of its features enables provides support for newer firmwares up to 2.5. This is a new update to what was a somewhat outdated loader, and something that we are sure you will enjoy. When we say enjoy, we mean love, because with this application you will be able to emulate full 2.5 edition PSP Firmware Support.

So just how do you go about running GTA on your 1.5 PSP? We have put together this simple walkthrough below, taking you step by step and you can rest assured you will be enjoying the features that 2.5 firmware provides on your 1.5 PSP. Even before you can "Sony Firmware Update 3.0".

Once you extract Device Hook onto your computer, copy both folders over to your PSP like any other homebrew. Then you are going to want to run it from the game menu on your PSP. The issue at hand here gamers is running newer games and taking advantage of the full blown PSP web browser. In order to take full advantage of the PSP 2.5 Firmware's features jog through the following steps.

Go to the Boot Select Menu and choose "Reboot XMB"
In the Firmware Menu and select "2.50 + 2.00"
Next go to UMD Version and make sure it is on "2.xx -> 2.00"
(optional) Overclock the PSP to "333mhz"
Finally, in UMD Mount, select " UMD Disk"
Return to the Device Hook Main Menu and click "Start"

Once your PSP reboots you will be in 2.50 mode. You are able to view the PSP Web Browser via this menu as well as play UMD's that require up to version 2.5 Firmware. This application will allow you to jump between newer PSP games that require firmware updates, the web browser, AND great games and applications such as Callisto that require 1.5 firmware all without upgrading or downgrading. They say miracles dont come true...

Note: There are two versions below. The 0.40 update showcases the Dev Hook Installer which allows redirects flash access to the PSP Memory Stick. The 0.41 version does have full 2.5 support, however WiFi is reportedly not functioning. In addition, overclocking was noted to possibly have a negative impact on Wifi. One thing to consider, while using the application it was noted that it might be possible to emulate 2.5 on a 2.0 version PSP allowing newer UMD's to be played on 2.0 PSP's, but no one at QJ.NET had one handy...

Here it is, the latest version of PSMonkey's Monkey64 great Nintendo64 emulator for the PSP is out!! Monkey64 is one of 2 N64 emulator available for the PSP, along with the N64 emulator port Daedalus. Here's what PSMonkey said:

"Monkey64 is an n64 emulator started from scratch that takes the PSP limitations into consideration. The ultimate goal is solid n64 emulation at 30-60fps on the psp. This will not come instantly but maybe 6 months from now it will be a reality."

Description:
Basically, you can watch TV on your PSP anywhere with a wifi connection. TVSP
receives the TV signal from a TV capture programmed called DScaler. And the best of all,
it doesn't cost $350 to get TV on my PSP :-)

Controls:
Press [UP] or [DOWN] to change channel.
Press [START] to quit. *** Please QUIT this way only, not by press Home ***.

Background Story:
How did I come up with TVSP? Hmmm, it was one day in my bathroom to take a load off :-)
When all of a sudden, omg, I have forgotten to bring anything in to entertain myself. Not a
Maxim magazine in sight. Delerium sets in. What have I done??? While being quite bored,
I had an epiphany. Hey, wouldn't it be cool if I can watch TV in the can. The rest is
history.

Installation Directions:
It's not very hard, it's actually quite simple. Just follow the directions "EXACTLY" and
you'll be watching tv on your psp in no time. You do need a TV Card though. I have a
ATI TV Wonder VE, and it works great. Any TV card that works with DScaler 4 is good.

1) Download DScaler 4 from
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/deinterlace/DScaler4115.exe

2) Install DScaler 4 and set it up. You can find help at
http://www.dscaler.org

3) copy the special "DI_EvenOnly.dll" file from TVSP.RAR and copy it into the DScaler 4
installation folder (default folder: "C:\Program Files\DScaler4\" ). It will overwrite
the original DL_EvenOnly.dll.

4) Run DScaler 4, and make sure to set menu BTCard->PixelWidth to 320. You have to do
this before the next step or it might crash or what not!

5) Select menu "Deinterlace" to "Even Scanlines Only". Now the Server DLL is running.

6) Edit TVSP.ini and put in the IP address of the computer you are running DScaler.

7) Run TVSP on the PSP and volia, you're wirelessly watching TV. Enjoy.

Developer Notes:
Initially I was going to use VLC instead. Somewhere along the line, it was just easier
to do this with DScaler instead for some technical reason. At a later date, I will add

developing this app for a month, I'll just release the source. Just ask if a month
elapsed and I haven't done squat. Btw, the server's port is 8888 if anyone needed to
configure their routers for serving TV over the internet.

UmdNetRipper copies recursively the whole UMD onto the network using a naive protocol. A simple listener program like netcat can be used to capture the ripped data into a file and an unfold program can re-create the original file/directory structure.

UMDTool v0.1 released

SodR has released version 0.1 of his UMD Tool homebrew application. UMDTool allows you to launch UMD's on your PSP using various settings. You can launch a 2.0+ UMd using MPH Game Loader, RunUMD, or run a UMD at 333Mhz (Unconfirmed). Here is what SodR said:
"My original idea was just to create a simple program that could launch MPHGL and RunUMD at 333MHz without any extra trouble. Then I just added a few extra functions and here we are. These days you don't know what program does what, or if you even can boot your new UMD on your 1.0/1.5 psp so I hope this program will make it a little easier to figure that out."

Here's a list of features and requirements:

Launch the UMD
Launch the UMD @ 333MHz
Launch the UMD with 2.0+ support (Uses same method as Flashmod, requires dump of the 2.0 flash in the Memory stick root)
Launch MPHGL @ 333MHz (Requires MPH Game Launcher)
Launch RunUMD @333MHz (Requires Run UMD)

The 333Mhz support has not been confirmed, due to the UMD changing the speed back to 222Mhz when the UMD is run. This application only works on 1.0/1.5, but provides a very nice interface for you to launch your UMD's from.

That machine DickyDick1969 is at it again with another release of his amazing homebrew application PiMPStreamer. And it's more 'pimpy' than ever !

For those who've been under a rock all this time, PiMPStreamer is a homebrew application which allows you to stream your videos wirelessly to your PSP. In a way, it emulates the very expensive Location Free Base Player, for free !

Here's what's new in the latest version 0.3 :

PMP Mod v2 changes are incorporated.
Skin Support has been removed temporarily to enable clean exit.
Newer Packet Structure means that more features like Variable Bitrates can be supported later.

MPH 2.00 Game Loader Source Code Released

Legendary PSP programmer MPH has released the source code for his Game Loader v1.1. MPH's game Loader today. MPH's game loader was the first homebrew application that allowed 1.5 PSPs to run Grand Theft Auto:Liberty City stories from the UMD, getting rid of the need to have 2.0+ firmware to run GTA.

The source code will allow other PSP coders to build on what MPH has done, or see how it works. Good news for anyone working on getting other games that require 2.0+ to run on 1.5.

NoKXPloit for PSP V1.5 firmware

A new tool has been released called 'NoKXPloit' which will save v1.5 firmware owners from putting a folder + folder% on 1.50. Just use the patcher and use any original eboot on 1.50 as if you had v1.0 PSP firmware. You can download and comment on this release Here

This program will patch the firmware 1.50 (in RAM) to allow it to run normal pbp's.(what people often badly call 1.0 EBOOTS).

The patch will remain resident in the firmware until one of these conditions happen:

2) You restart your psp holding the power button or remove the battery.

You can run/exit games/homebrews, put the psp in sleep mode... none of those things will delete

How to use No-KXploit Patcher

Copy "NOKXPLOIT" and "NOKXPLOIT%" folder from the archive to the PSP/GAME/ folder on you memory stick.
Browse to Game -> Memory Stick in your PSP menu interface and choose "NO-KXploit Patcher" from the sub-menu to start this program.
Wait for a short moment. This program will load and then exit it on itself.
When back in the PSP main interface again, you can start to launch any Eboot files on your PSP as you wish!

PiMPStreamer 0.25a released!

Once he's started, there's no stopping him! DickyDick1969 has released yet another update to his PiMPStreaner homebrew application, updating it to V0.25a. This Homebrew applciation allows you to stream movies directly from your PC to your PSP wirelessly, using a modification of the PMP mod.

New features in this release:

Smooth audio thanks to improved framerate settings (V 0.25)
Removed TCP setsockoptions (V0.25a)

This piece of homebrew keeps getting better, and personally, i think it's one of the best applications on the homebrew scene today, especially with the rate of updates!

Save doesnt work, but since this is a fighter we
dont think it will affect your enjoyment too much.

time trying...

PSP Loaders: Enter the Remix - What's going on ?

Wherefore art thou Humma.Kavula the masses asked as he parted from the PSP loader scene. Ever since the release of the MPH gameloader the PSP scene has started to show more signs of life. There have been new loaders and new edits since then but so many have come out so fast that they may get overlooked. The edits have been appearing left and right by people who wanted to add there own touch to the loader and hopefully some added features. Now remember in order to use any of these you will need the required firmware files.

This is one of the latest releases by Dragonuk, an all in one loader package which also boasts MP3 playback whilst you're playing a game.

The first edit was made by Mika. It allows games to be played without a disc in there drive. This edit is a combination of umdemulator, devhook and mphgameloader that gives life back to PSP with dead umd drives and gives extra playtime by saving battery life. Using this loader is simple, after you go back to system menu from umdemulator, choose the devhook edit, select the iso again and launch. This is the only edit I have found from Mika but with such few problems with the first edit theres no real reason for a second.

Next are edits by wakAwooki. There have been a few edits under this name. First is the fastloader edit, this edit made what was impossible before possible now. Because the way fastloader launches iso it wasn't possible to go back and launch the mph loader but this edit launches mph once the iso is launched. Theres nothing special to do when using this edit, simply choose your iso and launch. After this edit a umedmulator edit came out but because umdemulator uses boot.bin and eboot.bin there were two edits to give people a choice. The boot.bin edit launched mph when boot.bin was on. The eboot.bin version was for when boot.bin was off. It would have been a one edit version but because some games had 2.0 eboot it was necessary to use the games boot.bin and because some games had dummy boot.bin the eboot was necessary. Both of these needed to be on either direct load or system menu to work. The last edit was a dual firmware boot version. With the discovery of Dragonball Z needing a different firmware dump, this version was made assuming the new firmware wouldn't work on the other games. This one is used exactly like the other release except you select "original 2 0" on or off. On would launch firmware from folders flash0/flash1 and off would launch firmware from flash2/flash3.

Around the time the last edit came out Dark_Alex released an application that ran compressed iso which gave more space to people who wanted to cram more games on there memory stick. The first release was pretty much a beta version showing people that running compressed images on the PSP can be done. The compatibility of the first version wasn't all that great but within days a second version came out that added more games to the list. Dark_Alex is now on version 4 and this version not only has a much higher compatibility list but it also added more functions to help improve compatibility such as allocate tables in ram which will decrease memory use.

Chossy has made probably the most edits of all, his edits range from simple umdemulator edits to a launcher to launch any other edit without having to go through the system menu clutter. His first edit was a umdemulator edit which launched iso directly without having to go back to the system menu. There was no tricks just choose mphloader, boot.bin off and launch. His next edit was an eboot changer and it was for firmware selections to let you choose between two different ones. To use it you simply put it on your psp and choose eboot changer from your system menu and hit O twice. To go back to the original firmare repeat. His next release was Devhook GL plus which was more of a selector edit. This little baby let you choose which edited loader (umdemulator, devhook or fastloader) you wanted to use without having to constantly go up and down in your system menu selection. Using this is pretty much self explanatory just choose which loader you want, pick your iso and boot select method, then launch. Since new things for the PSP kept coming out so fast Chossy made another edit and released it days later. The new one was called Devhook evolved no umd solution. This new edit let you choose which loader to use just like the recent one except it added no umd feature to each loader so you did not need a umd for any of the loaders. The feature list of this version is daxziso v4 no umd, mphloader no umd, fastloader no umd, devhook no umd, umdemu no umd and an empty slot for future releases.

Last on the list is not an edit but a umd launching application which has not been successful with edits per say. Runumd is an application created by a very well known PSP developer nem from the Saturn Expedition Committee. What this tool does is allow you to play original umd that not even the MPH loader has been able to play. Only umd will work with this tool, not iso. Runumd dumps the needed files from the games update folder and uses them to run games for systems up to 2.6. Although this tool launches some new games, its been reported the games will more then likely crash after a while of playing but I'm sure this will all be sorted in future releases.

So there you have it, in the span of less then a month more edits then some people would want to handle. Hopefully this helped some people realize what each one does.

PSPlayerMT For PSP - Direct AVI Player Works On All the PSP

PSPlayerMT is a homebrew audio/video player for the PSP, which is capable of playing AVI videos with resolution up to 480*272@29.97 fps without lags. Yay! No more transcoding! The GUI is currently very simple, but the performance is so great. However unfortunately, we can't figure out the name of the author to give the credit to. All we know now is that it is made by a Korean guy.

UPDATE: Boys over at CNGBA has confirmed that this player also works on 2.00+ PSP! Upgraded users, download the eLoader and join the wonderful homebrew scene now! =D

pMEnc v0.1 - a Simple PMP Creator

modsyn has just released another handy Windows utility entitled pMEnc [a PMP encoder]. pMEnc is aimed towards those who wish to create high quality PMP videos with ease, and I must say - it is extremely easy!

The resulting PMP is 100% compatible with PMP Mod, and can be played back in full resolution on your PSP.

How to use (from the included readme.txt):

Extract the contents of the pMEnc.rar file to the directory (or folder, if you must) of your choice on your computer.
Double-click the file 'pMEnc.exe' in the install directory.
If this is the first time using pMEnc, you should first run the setup option.
Click the input file to select your input source. pMEnc will ask you for the title. That is the name of the output file it will create. By default the output file is created in the same directory as the input file. If you would like to change this, you can click the 'Output File' button to choose a new directory.
When you're ready, just hit the 'Start' button and wait for your PMP to be created.

Unfortunately at the current moment pMEnc v0.1 does not support DVD encoding, though it's soon to come with a future release, and loading external sound files has yet to be implemented.

Determining PSP firmware using box codes

It is well known that what can be done on a PSP is related to the firmware that the PSP is running. When selecting a new PSP at your local shop, you most likely would like to know what you're getting; here is how you can determine what firmware is loaded on that PSP.

This will be updated as the situation evolves. Typically, it takes a month or two before new firmware revisions start showing up pre-installed on new PSPs.

This is the label where the code is displayed:

The label may look differently depending on your locale, but the code letter should be found directly under the voltage rating (120v or 240v).

Here are known codes:

Motherboard NoteTo date there is no definite way to determine if a PSP has the dreaded motherboard. At this point, it can be said with confidence that:
F and below - is definitely not a TA-082.
G and H - is probably not a TA-082.
I - is far too likely to be a TA-082; core or value pack are equally likely.
J and above - The likelihood of a TA-082 increases but is not universal.

Firmware

The most important part of the PSP is its firmware. Many owners refer to the firmware as the PSP's OS (operating system) or BIOS (Basic Input/Output System). The firmware of the PSP is located in the PSP itself and not on your memory stick. The firmware on the PSP is replaceable/ upgradeable. Sony issues updates to the firmware every few months and adds new features. With these new features usually come security updates. These security improvements fix up holes in the firmware that may be accessible to the user. Sony does not like homebrew due to the piracy of UMD games on the memory stick and would stop it at almost any cost (Piracy/Isos/Loaders are discussed in a few sections below).
The Updates are downloadable on Sony's PSP website ( Playstation.com) and only allows you to download the latest update. Once you have the update downloaded, move it to your PSP/Game/UPDATE folder (the eboot file) and it shall update your PSP. Once installed (the update) you can delete it from your memory stick

1.0 Firmware:

The first firmware version that was installed on a PSP is firmware version 1.0 (Japanese PSP's only). This firmware version was pre-installed on the first PSP's released. The 1.0 firmware is unable to be downloaded since it was never released as an update. You can find various dumps of the firmware, but these dumps are not complete. (Dumps are basically files from the 1.0 firmware that were dumped onto the memory stick). The 1.0 firmware allowed for unsigned code to be ran on the PSP, and all that was required was an eboot.pbp compiled file. This file was run straight from the PSP/Game folder located on the memory stick. (Homebrew code is described in the section: Memory Stick located under Games on the PSP)

1.5 Firmware:

This firmware was the first update to the Sony PSP in Japan. This version was also pre-installed on the US PSP release. This update changes from 1.0 JP to 1.5 JP include: Support for German, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese and Russian language options on the PSP menu (it will not affect in-game menus), a setting to retain the screen mode on videos, and a quick-resume function to resume playback of audio and video after coming out of the PSP's sleep mode (it won't automatically keep playing the media file, but you can jump right into the track or movie exactly where you left off before sleeping.) Download the 1.5 update here: [Click Here to download] This update, however, did not allow for the execution of eboot.pbp files from the memory stick like the 1.0 firmware did

After a few months of the US PSP release there were rumors of people finding a way to run homebrew on this new 1.5 firmware. Many did not believe this at first, but a few days later, on June 15th, they had to. You can find this news-breaking coverage at the following link: [Click here to view PSPUpdates.com News Article] Two days after this hack of the 1.5 firmware, a safer exploit was produced. The previous exploit required two memory sticks that you switched once the PSP booted the split eboot (The file is split using the KXploit program that PSP-Dev created.). The new method does not require this and only requires the original MS1 folder contain a % at the end and the second folder to remain the same name. This was a major accomplishment.

1.51 Firmware

The second update for Japanese PSP's (first for the US) was the 1.51 update. Update changes: The new Firmware update fixes various security issues in the PSP's v1.0 firmware which effectively fills holes to stop unsigned code from being executed.

As stated above, this new firmware does not allow for unassigned code to be run on the PSP (same as 1.5 but with heightened security). At the current time homebrew code is unable to be ran on this firmware and any other firmware above this one.

1.52 Firmware

The third update for JP PSP's (2nd for US) was the 1.52 update. Update changes include: UMD Music to be run from the main menu and higher security.
Once again, homebrew can not be run on this firmware version.

2.0 Firmware

This is Sony's first major update to their Sony Playstation Portable. There have been numerous changes in this version and all are very significant.

Update: 2.0 PSP's can now run homebrew. This is done by updating to the 2.0 firmware (ONLY IF YOU HAVE 1.51/1.52/2.0 should you do this) and then using Fanjita's 2.0 Eboot Loader . Alternatively, you can now run homebrew using Fanjita's eLoader by means of the GTA Savegame Exploit.

2.01 Firmware

This is Sony's response to the overflow exploit found in 2.0. Aside from this "security patch," nothing else was added to this firmware package. At this point in time you cannot downgrade on a 2.01 PSP!

Update: 2.01 PSP's can now run homebrew using Fanjita's eLoader by means of the GTA Savegame Exploit.

2.50 Firmware

This firmware version was released only a few days after the 2.01 firmware patch was released. This contains a new major addition (Location Free Technology) and other small changes. At this point in time you cannot downgrade on a 2.50 PSP!

Updated parts of the firmware include:

[LocationFree™ Player] has been added as a feature under [Network].
[Auto-Select] and [Unicode (UTF-8)] have been added as options to [Encoding] under [View] in the [ Internet Browser] menu bar.
Settings for [Text Size] and [Display Mode] in [Internet Browser] can now be saved.
The input history of online forms accessed through [Internet Browser] can now be saved.

Copyright-protected video can now be played under [Video].
- (This applies to video saved on Memory Stick Duo™ media).
- For details, contact the video content provider.
- Note that fees may be charged to obtain or use copyright-protected video.
- Downloadable copyright-protected video may not be available in all countries

and regions.

[Set via Internet] has been added as an option to [Date and Time] in [Date & Time Settings] under [Settings].
[WPA-PSK (AES)] has been added as a security method under [Network Settings].

Korean input mode has been added to the on-screen keyboard.

2.60 Firmware

This firmware version was released on November 29th, 2005. At this point in time you cannot downgrade on a 2.60 PSP!

Updated parts of the firmware include:

[Simplified Chinese (GB18030)] and [Tradition Chinese (Big5)] have been added as options to [Encoding] under [View] in the [Internet Browser] menu bar. (Characters may be indistinct in some cases when these encoding options are selected.)

You can now download video data that supports copyright protection using the [Internet Browser].
WMA has been added as a codec that can be played under [Music]. (This applies to music data saved on your Memory Stick.) Note: You must adjust a system setting to enable playback of WMA format music data. A connection to the internet is required to adjust the setting.

Update: 2.60 PSP's can now run homebrew using Fanjita's eLoader by means of the GTA Savegame Exploit.

MPH Firmware Launcher v1.4.0

MPH Firmware Launcher allows a user to launch any PSP firmware from the memory stick. Very easy to use put the Eboot.pbp in your root folder of your memory stick. and run MPH firmware launcher , I test out the 2.0 firmware, and able to run the web browser, very cool.

This version includes the following additions. Using this program on a PSP with 1.0 or 1.50 Firmware, you can "emulate" a higher firmware version from your memory stick and gain access to some of the features 2.0+ Firmware has to offer, such as AVC video playback and limited browser functionality. This program will not allow you to play games that require 2.0+ to play, such as Grand Theft Auto. Here are the new additions and instructions to this interesting piece of homebrew:

New graphic interface
Install / Uninstall firmware with interface from an eboot.pbp or a flash0 folder
Copy flash1 files automatically
Language support
Corrected some bugs
Installation:
- For 1.00 firmware : copy MPHFL (in 1.00 folder) to PSP/GAME folder of your memory stick
- For 1.50 firmware : copy MPHFL and MPHFL% (in 1.50 folder) to PSP/GAME of your memory stick

Put files of flash0 (data, dic, font, kd et vsh) and flash1 (dic, registry et vsh) in ms0:/ (folder of your choice, default : ms0:/flash0 and ms0:/flash1) (see Firmware convert tutorial.txt in zip)

Run MPH Firmware Launcher.

Browser:

Don't use logfile with browser else browser will freeze (maybe because browser call sceIoCloseAll and file descriptor of Log file is close also, sceIoWrite failed and psp freeze).

Video file:

The AVC video must be stored in :

{memory stick letter}:/MP_ROOT/100ANV01/MAQxxxxx.MP4

where xxxxx is number (example MAQ00001.MP4).

The MPEG4 video must be stored in :

{memory stick letter}:/MP_ROOT/100MNV01/M4Vxxxxx.MP4

Finally the day of streaming video to your psp has come, Here is a good guide to get you started
"Moved my network code to the M4g3 version. Also added configfile support so that you are able to make your WIFI settings via the configfile pmp.ini. Since i had to move the main thread to userspace the HOME button isn't working, so you have to use TRIANGLE to quit the player."

Put on your thinking caps! For all of you tech gurus out there, here's a new release from Optixx of the wireless streaming version of the AVI media player PMP Mod. As many of you noticed from our last posting, this program is not currently very friendly and requires a bit of networking knowhow to get it compiled and get a streaming server setup. Here's some tips and info from Optixx, as well as a Windows based Python server configuration file that will hopefully make things a bit easier. If you're not good with all this stuff, I suggest checking out the comments on his site, or asking around on our forums for help.

Made a binary release of the network enabled PMP Mod M4g3 media player. Since i don't use Windows i can't deliver an windows tested pmp server script.

Some Tips and Tricks:

* Use an static ip address
* Double check your PSP WIFI Setug
* Choose which WIFI Setup to use and the edit con flag in pmp.ini, which is an index to your WIFI Setup, so first WIFI config implies con=0;
* Check your remote server script with wget or curl

PSP Universal Remote

One of the most requested applications for the PSP has finally become a reality! Thanks to Massa84 you can now turn your PSP into a universal remote capable of controlling thousands of devices! Thanks to Alexmae for the info and the translation!

WORKS ONLY ON 1.50

What it does

it lets you emulate every remote supported by lirc (www.lirc.org), they're nearly 1800 (all included in the release)

for the remotes not yet supported i suggest you to try to use the others remotes from the same manufacturer. there's a good probability that they would work

How do i make it work?

- extract the archive in the psp root
- launch the app
- press square and the remote list will appear
- select the manufacturer pressing x
- select the remote pressing x
- program will "reboot"
- press circle to make appear the commands list
- select the command and press x

to exit press triangle! home button makes the psp crash

What will it do:

in a near future it will have a leaning commands function, the gui will be improved now it's a little bit empty
raw lirc support

these files are already available but the app doesn't find any command
